Bad seed: Health risks of genetically modified corn

With symptoms including headaches, nausea, rashes, and fatigue, Caitlin Shetterly visited doctor after doctor searching for a cure for what ailed her. What she found, after years of misery and bafflement, was as unlikely as it was utterly common

The office of allergist Paris Mansmann, MD, sits on a grassy slope overlooking the Royal River, a wide waterway that originates in inland Maine and winds down across farmland and under train tracks until it hits the coastal town of Yarmouth, where it sloshes into the Atlantic Ocean.

When I first came to Mansmann in February 2011, the river was covered with ice, and bare trees stood silver sentry on its shores. I was 36. I’d been sick for three and a half years.

During that time, when I wasn’t working as a writer and theater director or being a wife and mother, I visited doctors and had tests. I told few friends or members of my extended family how ill I was, because I didn’t have any way to explain what was wrong. I had no diagnosis, just a collection of weird symptoms: tight, achy pain that radiated through my body and caused me to hobble around (my ankles, I’d joke to my husband, Dan, felt like they’d been “Kathy Batesed,” à la the movie Misery); burning rashes that splashed across my cheeks and around my mouth like pizza sauce; exhaustion; headaches; hands that froze into claws while I slept and hurt to uncurl in the morning; a constant head cold; nausea; and, on top of all that, severe insomnia—my body just could not, would not, turn off and rest. I visited every doctor who’d see me and tried everything they threw at me: antidepressants; painkillers; elimination diets (including a long eight months when I went without any of the major allergens, such as gluten, nuts, dairy, soy, and nightshades); herbal supplements; iodine pills; steroid shots; hormone treatments; Chinese teas; acupuncture; energy healing; a meditation class—you name it, I did it. Nothing worked. After I maxed out the available rheumatologists, endocrinologists, nutritionists, gastroenterologists, Lyme disease specialists, acupuncturists, and alternative-medicine practitioners in the Portland metropolitan area, I was sent to neurologists in Boston. All of my tests came back normal.

In late 2010, after a long and unhappy antibiotic treatment for Lyme disease, my newest GP (who’s still my doctor today), Chuck de Sieyes, MD, announced that he was referring me to Mansmann: “Because I have no idea what’s going on with you, and he’s one of the smartest guys around. And frankly, I’ve had it!”

Mansmann had moved to Yarmouth with his wife and kids to be close to his parents, who’d retired in Maine. A third-generation allergist, he worked in his father’s allergy clinic, at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, during high school. While in college at Saint Joseph’s University, also in Philadelphia, he helped his dad develop two asthma drugs. Later, he headed an allergy and immunology clinic at a West Virginia hospital for 10 years.

Mansmann has a helmet of thick, graying hair and an intensely serious air. After escorting me into an exam room, he sat down across from me and promptly pushed aside my thick medical file. He’d read through it all, he said, but he wanted to hear the story from me. He listened patiently, asking questions every so often: When did my rashes flare? Was the pain an ache in my muscles, or did it feel deeper? Was I worse after I slept or at the end of the day? He seemed, as we spoke, to have all the time in the world. Then, with no pyrotechnics, he offered his theory: “I think it’s possible you’ve developed a reaction to genetically modified corn.”

Genetically modified corn? Everyone’s heard of GMO corn, but I realized I didn’t know what it actually was. Mansmann explained that starting in the mid-1980s, the biotechnology giant Monsanto began to genetically alter corn to withstand its herbicide Roundup—the goal being to eradicate weeds but not crops—as well as to resist a pest called the corn borer. These small changes in the DNA of the corn are expressed by the plant as proteins. It’s those proteins, Mansmann believes, that can act as allergens, provoking a multisystemic disorder marked by the overproduction of a type of white blood cell called an eosinophil.

He swabbed inside my nose with a Q-tip, then placed the results under a microscope. “Take a look,” Mansmann said. “See all those pink cells? Those are eosinophils.” My nose, it seemed, was chock-full of them. When the immune system is working properly, eosinophils swarm certain invading substances, be they parasites or viruses, and work to eliminate them. Sometimes, however, an allergenic protein may prompt the immune system to release eosinophils. Then, it’s as if a faucet gets turned on but can’t be turned off—eosinophils just keep coming. Eventually they begin to leave the bloodstream and may infiltrate and damage the GI tract, esophagus, mucous membranes, lungs, the fascial system (the layer of connective tissue that surrounds the muscles, blood vessels, and nerves), and the skin—hence, the avalanche of symptoms. (Some allergists say that the best way to test for a true eosinophilic disorder is to look for the cells in the esophagus and GI tract with an endoscopy. But Mansmann thinks that once you have a preponderance of them in your nasal mucus, they’re likely to be elsewhere.)

Mansmann’s advice was to strip all corn, even that marked organic, from my diet. “It’s almost impossible to find a corn source in the United States that doesn’t have the [protein] in it,” he said. The U.S. government started approving GMO corn and soybeans for sale in the mid-1990s, and today, 88 percent of corn, and 93 percent of soybeans, are the transgenic varieties. Moreover, Mansmann and others contend that due to cross-pollination via winds, birds, and bees, there’s no such thing anymore as a GMO-free corn crop. He estimated that it would take from two to four months of living without corn for the eosinophils to cycle out of my body, and
almost a year before I’d feel entirely like myself. Source-Elle

Ranjana Gauhar presents “Ksheer Sagar”

Renowned Odissi dancer and exponent Ranjana Gauhar’s “Ksheer Sagar–The Might of the Ocean” was staged recently in Delhi, reports daily star.

The dance production wove together two mythological stories: “Chandrabhaga” and “Matsya Avatar”, both with the ocean as backdrop.

In the first production, innocent Chandrabhaga, daughter of the ocean, is a hapless pawn in a wager between the Sun God Surya and God of Love Kamdev, who try to win her hand in an attempt to prove their might. When Surya’s attentions prove too much, the traumatised Chandrabhaga prefers to jump to her death in the ocean. “The gods are also revealed to be fallible,” says choreographer- dancer-writer, filmmaker Ranjana who played a graceful Chandrabhaga and conceived the story.

The mythological story of Chandrabhaga lives on. The area around Chandrabhaga beach, located east of the famous sun temple of Konark, Odisha is a sacred site even today.

“Chandrabhaga” was performed by the students of Utsav-Ranjana’s Dance Academy. The production combined the lyrical grace of Odissi with the strong martial moves of Chhau dance. If one couldn’t take one’s eyes off the delicate footwork of the Odissi dancers, neither could one resist the prowess of the two Chhau dancers who took on the roles of Surya and Kamdev.

“Matsya Avatar” is an episode drawn from Indian mythology. Here the focus was on the first avatar of Lord Vishnu, the preserver, who was supposed to have been incarnated 10 times over. “The underlying meaning was the importance of environmental preservation and saving nature,” says Ranjana.

Transforming the complex tale of “Matsya Avatar” into the medium of dance, is a feat. But then Ranjana’s is a powerful force in the world of dance as winner of the Padma Shri and Sangeet Natak Akademi award.

Apart from the aesthetics of dance, she underscores her productions with live issues such as gender and environment

Tours around town in Eid holydays

With Ramadan and Eid holidays here, it is the perfect time to let out the travel bug in us. While some prefer the thrill of new countries, exotic food and a different culture, there is a lot to see and experience in Bangladesh, reports daily star.

For those out there who would love to travel the country but don’t know where to start, travel and tourism companies come in handy. Here’s a short list of agencies that organise packaged trips around the country and abroad from the very common Cox’s Bazaar to Sri Lankan shores.

Eid signals more than gorging on rich food and dressing in your latest threads. The biggest Muslim festival also means bonuses from employers and discounts from retailers; together they sum up to money spending time. Add the holiday element and you have the makings of an excellent vacation. Thus, to prepare you for it, Lifestyle went around and got the down-low on the best deals around town, keeping a limit of Tk.50,000 in mind. But here and there, we were swayed to go beyond our budget. But what harm can that do? After all, its Eid, isn’t it?

For those with a budget not exceeding Tk.50,000 per person, Prime Tourism has a number of deals that are currently being offered. For Tk.33,900, you can avail a three nights and four days trip to Paro and Thimpu, staying in a 2-star hotel. For a bit more, you can easily get a 3-star hotel. The cost includes return air tickets, breakfast, lunch, dinner, airport-hotel-airport transfer fees and sightseeing costs. Prime Tourism will also help with the visa application, if required. A trip to Kathmandu, Nepal for two nights and three days costs Tk.25,900 to 29,000 depending on the selection of a 2-star hotel or a 3-star hotel. This package also includes dinner, guide service and sight-seeing along with those listed above. For those seeking more tranquility than usual, a trip to the ancient Himalayan capital of Leh is surely in order. A two person trip, inclusive of all that’s mentioned, would set you back Tk.26,900 with the cost per person falling with the addition of more people. Finally, there is the five nights, six days package for Maldives and Sri Lanka, which costs Tk.54,900, inclusive of the services listed above. Prime Tourism is located at Motaleb Mansion, Room # 506, Floor # 4 , 2, R. K. Mission Road, Dhaka-1203 and they can be reached at 01971810631.

Their Nepal package, which costs Tk.25,000 includes palm readings, shopping discount cards and casino facilities. A four-night, five-day trip to Kathmandu and Pokhara would cost around Tk.44,000.

When traveling, always remember to do your research before choosing your package of preference. Find out about the accommodations, read reviews, compare carefully and finally make up your mind. Find out all the traveling requirements and keep a checklist. Finally, ensure you have your travel agent’s number at which he can be reached during emergencies. This can be very important at times. In the end, remember to have a great trip and do enough to make great memories within the short span of time Eid provides.

Shah Rukh Khan advices his son Aryan not to break a girl's heart

To counter the rise in crime against women, Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan thinks it is the responsibility of the parents to teach their sons on how to behave with girls, reports Indian Express.

"We have to change the concept of how we bring up our children at home. We need to teach boys how to be gentle, good and respectful to women," Shah Rukh Khan told reporters when asked to comment on the rising crime graph against women.

The superstar said when he talks about girls to his teenage son, he tells him to never break a girl's heart.

"I tell him - Don't break a girl's heart, treat her gently and there is no way that you can look at an atrocity done on a women and if you do that you will not be forgiven by your father and mother," Shah Rukh Khan added.

Shah Rukh Khan said the issue of women safety is not only there in India but around the world.

"I think the whole country, the whole world for that matter, has issues when it comes to safety of women," said Shah Rukh Khan.

Proud to be the brand ambassador of the state, he said once his film Chennai Express releases this Eid, he will come down to Kolkata to see what can be done to promote it.

"I will come down and be the spokesperson. I will do whatever I am asked to do. And will do even what I am not asked to do," SRK added.

On when would he be shooting for a film in Kolkata he said that would depend on the story of the film.

"Films like Barfi and Kahaani were shot here because the script was like that. If a film requires beauty, history, art, I would come to shoot in Kolkata," said Shah Rukh Khan.

When asked about romancing the 27-year-old Deepika Padukone on-screen in Chennai Expressthe 47-year-old said age has nothing to do with romance.

I won't say I don't want a Rs 100 crore film: Deepika

Deepika Padukone is on a roll with a clutch of successful films behind her and others like 'Chennai Express' just a fortnight away from hitting the screens. TOI gets into a brief conversation with the actress ahead of her Eid release. Excerpts...

How did the conversation go with Shah Rukh Khan and RohitShetty when you agreed to do Chennai Express?

There was no conversation whatsoever. I was offered the film, and said, 'Sure, I would love to be a part of it'. When Rohit and his team narrated the script to me, I was in splits.

Rohit's films aren't really known for their leading ladies doing anything substantial. Weren't you worried?

Rohit's other films have largely been ensemble affairs but in the case of Chennai Express, the girl's part is quite strong and integral to the movie. In fact, I feel silly to even justify why I am doing the film.

In Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge,it was Shah Rukh who wooed Kajol during their first train journey but in Chennai Express, we hear the reverse is happening with you taking him for a ride.

To begin with, it's a classic DDLJ moment for Shah Rukh and I in the film (smiles). After having watched the movie as a 10-year old, there I was, reliving the moment with my very own Rahul...

With Shah Rukh and you in the lead and Rohit at the helm of affairs, it is expected this Eid will bring in more than Rs 100 crore for Chennai Express. Have you set any targets for yourself?

I won't say I don't want a Rs 100 crore film. Good numbers make everyone happy. As for the final collections, it is for Rohit, Shah Rukh and UTV to be worried about (smiles).

For someone who had back-to back flops a couple of years ago to be now considered a contender in the Rs 100 crore race, it's some journey, isn't it?

Yes, you do celebrate it for a while but then move on. Of course, I have worked hard to get where I am. It hasn't happened by chance

Don't know where size zero term came from: Kareena Kapoor

Bollywood actress Kareena Kapoor says rather than surviving on salads and juices, she eats simple Indian food to stay fit and healthy, reports Times of India.

"I eat only simple Indian home food - sabzi, roti, dal, chawal, ghee. There are so many benefits of having ghee. My grandmother is 84 and she is still fit and looks beautiful," Kareena told reporters.

"One should eat everything especially healthy and not junk food. I don't like the idea of starving. I would eat and burn it out in gym. The amount of intake is what matters," she said.

Kareena, who was size zero five years back, begins her day with a banana milk shake followed by a cup of coffee.

"I don't know where this term of size zero came from, people called it that way (size zero). I became thin for 'Tashan'. And that is because of Rujuta, I followed her instructions," she said.

The 32-year-old actress is a part of a nutrition documentary by famous celebrity nutritionist Rujuta Diwekar.

Kareena reveals that she is a vegetarian. Her husband actor Saif Ali Khan likes to eat meat but rarely.

"Nawabi food is rich in meat so I opt for dal or paneer while Saif eats mutton. I don't eat meat," she adds.

Kareena feels older actresses like Madhubala and others were beautiful because they ate simple food.

Achkan in fashion

The achkan for men – a knee-length jacket – is a perfect example of taking your look to the next level. For a little more flair in design and cut, the angrakha style is a winner for this month.

Even something as simple as an open-waist coat can appropriately mix things up. It’s understandable for you to keep things lighter in the warm weather, so try anything that will get you through the day.

From extravagance to a subtle statement, trying out something new never hurt anyone. If anything, it results in more compliments being thrown your way.

A kurta may be a go-to item on a regular basis, but how many times does Eid come around every year? Make that extra effort, and invest in something carried in magnificent quality.

The items mentioned can be found in stores like Manyavar and Vasavi

Priyanka Chopra’s latest single Exotic may have not have got great reviews in India, but seems like other countries have really liked her sound. Shah Rukh Khan: Won't talk about relationship with Salman Khan in public

Actor Shah Rukh Khan is still staying mum on the much hyped hug with Salman Khan, as he refused to comment again on his relationship with the latter, reports NDTV.

The two superstars, who were not on talking terms, hugged each other at an Iftaar party in Mumbai recently, fuelling rumours of a patchup.

"The personal relationships that I share and altercations and issues and love and the discussions that I have...Me nor Salman, neither of any of us have ever talked about it in public. We won't begin to do that now," Shah Rukh told reporters here while promoting his forthcoming film Chennai Express here.

The actors hugged each other on July 21, indicating that the two who were not on talking terms after an incident at Bollywood actress Katrina Kaif's birthday bash in 2008, may have buried the hatchet.

The actors, who were attending Congress leader Baba Siddique's annual Iftaar party after a long time, faced each other, shook hands and hugged, when Siddiqui asked them to meet each other.

Both Shah Rukh and Salman seemed perfectly fine, the latter being the one who took the initiative to shake hands and hug Shah Rukh.

Dubbed as the Badshaah of Bollywood", Shah Rukh fervently expressed his desire to do something for West Bengal, of which he is the brand ambassador.

"I feel very humbled that I am the brand ambassador. I think I should take some time out. I am going to come down to Kolkata after I release Chennai Express, and spend a day and figure out what I can do," said Shah Rukh

Of Middle Aged Babes and Drooping Assets

Will somebody please tell me why a woman needs to wear a balcony on her bra? I know the bit about Romeo using the beauteous Juliet’s hair to clamber up her balcony, but to have a balcony on one’s bosom seems to me a bit weird, reports Times of India.

July and August season being sale season and that being the only time when I can buy anything in a mall without worrying myself into a nervous state, I happened to wander into a bra store the other day and was gob-smacked. There where balconette bras, demis, strapless, multi-ways, racer-backs and underwired in orange, yellow, candy-floss pink, midnight blue and black. And there were sheer lacy ones, and satin bras with itsy-bitsy undies to go with it that had cute little bows in the centre and - this knocked my pants off - a crotchless panty to complement a bra with holes where the nipples should have been covered!

And if Samuel Taylor Coleridge said:

Water, water, everywhere

And all the boards did shrink

Water, water everywhere

Nor any drop to drink, this is what came to the mind of your’s truly:

Bras, bras, bras everywhere

and not even one pathetic bra to wear….

Within five minutes of entering the shop and being given pitying once-overs by the lovelies who double up as store assistants - “how can you walk into our store with a 36++ requirement” - my spirits and my breasts drooped in disappointment. I did eye a certain racy number in a shade of red that would have driven a bull to desperation, but my assets warned me that wearing a feather on the breast might not be good either for my professional life nor my personal. The significant other in my life, I suspect, would spend the night sneezing from the allergy caused by the feather tickling him. And so, with my considerable assets feeling rather deprived and unadorned, I beat it from the store, feeling rather than hearing the sniggers from the bunnies, sorry… the lovelies. My assets are clearly non-performing assets (NPAs) given that they cannot be accommodated in a balcony, pushed up, pushed down, shown off, maximised or minimised.

My heart yearned for the good old cotton bra with its grand conical cup, that amma used to buy us sisters. “Iske size ka bodice dikhao”, she would say and the droopy-eyed store owner would look us squarely in the bosom and tell his assistant: “size 32 b lao”. Those were not bad bras, come on now - pop-queen Madonna became attained iconic status when she wore just them and a panty on stage and also made a million bucks from that one act!

How to become a middle-aged babe. I read a book by that name a few years ago and it was all about how forty-plus women need not throw in their hats but can actually transform themselves into these glamorous babes with smoky eyes, sexy clothes and come-hither painted nails. With that in mind, I moved to the next store, a happening Spanish brand that my 21-year-old frequents with collateral damage to my bank balance. She looks like a million bucks in the brand’s clothing though and so,  like a homing pigeon, I headed towards the store that had SALE emblazoned outside.

Whoever said the zero-sized model is passé should check out this store. I searched high and low, pulled out dozens of stuff lying in bargain boxes, looked under the table even where stuff seemed to have been discarded but there was nary a piece of clothing to hide my generous curves and the above-mentioned assets up-North. Not unless I wanted to outfit myself in prison-uniform striped PJs and over-sized shirt to go with it. And that would do nothing for the middle-aged babe that I wanted to be. Besides, I suspected this would drive the spouse out of the bedroom fearful of my PMS and I would not blame him – he has earlier witnessed grinding of teeth in irritation, hair coloured glorious burgundy and his white Italian linen shirt tossed into the washing machine with my purple dress.

Ever tried getting into one of those fashionably thin, dangerously-low pants that come in the cutest colours? I had to fairly tie myself in knots and consider lying on the trial room floor to wriggle myself into one recently, only to be sorely disappointed. Unless I wanted to wear them on my knee, I would have to abandon this fashion trend because the damn things hit a solid road block at the thighs.

I did try other things that are trending. Picked out tops with daring scooped back, but they displayed the ample tyres on my rear side, got into a kaftan dress but it made me resemble a whale in distress and eventually made it to the size XL corner of an Indian brand that makes clever dresses for real women like me. Ah, bliss!

And oh, did I tell you the near orgasmic pleasure of gorging on an almond muffin, a slice of heavenly banana loaf at the café on my way out of the mall? Never mind the middle-aged babe. I will make do with the middle-aged part. And that shiny glazed donut in that café...

Hugh Jackman goes naked at Japanese hot springs, raises eyebrows

Hugh Jackman, who visited hot springs in Japan during a break in filming The Wolverine, upset fellow bathers by failing to cover up his manhood.

The 44-year-old was entirely nude while at the hot springs and it took him almost an hour to understand that the hand towel he had been given at

the entrance was to cover his private parts, News.com.au reported.

Hugh JackmanJackman told the publication that the place is separated for male and female and they hand you a towel, a small washcloth.

He said that there are eight different types of tubs with heats of different temperatures.

The Australian actor asserted that he got so hot that he used the towel to dip into the cold water and put it on his head, but he was getting very strange looks from everybody.

He said he thought that he is getting those looks because was the only white person there and may be he wasn't allowed to be at the base of Mount Fuji.

Jackman further added that after a guy in the tub mumbled, he realised that the towel was meant to cover his privates.

The story for the book features 007 battling evil chemist Julius Gorner, who is targeting Britain.

10 ways to make your life more romantic

Sometimes we get so busy with our work that we don't get time to express our love to the most important person of our life. So here are some tips to bring back the romance into your marriage, by Times of India.

Spend quality time

Sometimes you maybe in the same room for hours but not talk to each other simply because you are busy with your own work. If you are alone with your husband make sure you spend the time talking to him.

Arrange for a date

If you have kids, arrange for a baby sitter and go out on a date. If he enjoys dancing then you can hit a nice place where you can shake a leg. If your man would like to indulge in some games take him to a bowling parlour. Believe it this will work like a charm.

Be the chef

Food is the easiest way to a man's heart. So, cook a great meal comprising of the dishes he likes. But if you aren't convinced about your culinary skills don't try and experiment, order food from his favourite restaurant and then set up some candles for a romantic candlelight dinner.

Leave love notes

Whether it's leaving some love notes around the house or SMSes or email, write him a lovey-dovey note. Men may pretend to be tough but they do like to know that they are on your mind.

Express it loud

Though you may have sent him a love note or email, there's nothing like professing your love every now and then. Do let him know that after all the years as a married couple you are still very much in love with him.

Shower him with attention

Dote on him once in a while. Praise him for his hard work. Men love attention though they may claim otherwise. Praise him for his taste in clothes or perfumes, he's sure to like it a lot.

Plan a surprise vacation

If you are not likely to get any alone time in the city, plan a vacation. Depending on the kind of time you both can spare, take a long or short trip. You could take him out to the place he's always wanted to go.

Find ways to spend time together

It could be while travelling to or from work or just going shopping together or even a long drive after dinner. If you can't head out for a vacation just find ways to be in each other's company.

Let him spend time with his gang

Yes, you should spend some time together, but your man will really appreciate it if you let him spend an evening with his buddies. Ensure that you don't call him during the time when he is with his friends.

Appreciate things he does

Even if it's something simple, try and tell him how much you appreciate his help around the house. More then the praise and attention that you shower on him, it's this appreciation that will make him fall in love with you all over again.

7 tips for men to understand women better

A new survey has helped compile seven tips on how men can rise above others in their dealings with women, reports Times of India.

Firstly, communication should not be a problem, as for the women there is nothing as appealing as a man, who listens to them. If a man wants to tell them something they wouldn't mind knowing it but face-to-face is always preferable and if that is not possible men can contact them via texts, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Secondly, complimenting women is nice, as sometimes they do need a bit of verbal assurance.

Phrases that might help men in a crisis: "Your hair looks awesome tonight!" "Is that a new dress?" "You blitzed it in that tennis match/speech/insert other awesomeness here!"

Thirdly, a man should not be a penny pincher instead he should pay on his first date if they want to see the lady again.

Fourthly, they should organise their social life and there are two obvious problem areas there:

First, the man who never does anything off his own bat, women may find it nice if they went and did something interesting occasionally.

Second, a male who simply does too much, women would like that person to take out some time for them.

Fifthly, some thought should be put by men in the presents that they give to women.

Sixthly, men should try to get a bit stylish and should invest in a fool-proof man outfit: nice jeans, a T-shirt and unscuffed trainers and for more smart-casual occasions, substitute in a good quality shirt and some leather shoes.

Lastly, when men don't know the direction of a place they should admit it and not pretend about knowing it

South African film banned for 'child pornography'

A low-budget movie no one in South Africa is allowed to see has become the most talked-about film of the year. For the first time since apartheid ended in 1994, regulators banned a local feature film, saying the movie Of Good Report contained child pornography, reports Hindustan times.

This halted its screening this month at the Durban International Film Festival. The film's director and movie critics have likened the ban to apartheid-era censorship, saying the film, which examines the abuse of girls by older men, hit a nerve in a country where patriarchal rule dominates wide sections of society.

The ban has raised worries about self-censorship in the local industry, where film-makers battle for scant funding for films that often take on tough questions about race, sexuality and the damage caused by apartheid. "There is this branch of very brave film-makers who are making remarkable works and often they are deeply uncomfortable works. This is something that South Africans have become particularly good at," said Peter Machen, art critic and manager of the Durban film festival.

The Film and Publication Board, a government-affiliated regulator, objected to a scene in Of Good Report where the character of a 16-year-old-girl has sex with a teacher. Board spokesman Prince Mlimandlela Ndamase said the four regulators had all decided that the film was pornographic. "The government calls us pornographers when we bring light to social issues," the film's director Jahmil XT Qubeka told Reuters on Tuesday.

"I cry this beloved country because we are in trouble." The movie has dominated radio and TV talk shows and social media since the ban came to light this week. Many commentators have said the board was working in a way similar to the former apartheid regime by banning an art work that brought attention to a little-discussed social problem. They also questioned how the board could classify the movie as child pornography when the legal age of consent is 16 and the actress in the sex scene is 23 in real life.

Ferial Haffajee, editor of the influential weekly City Press, tweeted: "Last year, we had to spend a lot of time with the censors of the Film & Publication Board. They were dopes. Still are." An appeals panel found the board had overstepped its bounds last year when it restricted viewing of a politically charged artwork that showed President Jacob Zuma standing with his genitals exposed in a pose reminiscent of Soviet-era leaders. The producer of Of Good Report has appealed the ban and hopes the film can be shown before the Durban festival ends on Sunday.

But the ban has also won the film international attention, which is likely to translate into screenings at film festivals outside South Africa. The movie could join the likes of other local films that have won international acclaim for unnerving topics, such as Skoonheid - Afrikaans for Beauty - about a white bigot in his 40s fighting to suppress his homosexuality.

6 Things your guy doesn't want to hear

When you are in love, it's important to have and show mutual respect. As a lover, you can afford to take some liberties, reports Times of India.

However, there are few things that are better left unsaid. Irrespective of the fact that your guy is the coolest man on the planet, there are things he might not appreciate hearing from especially you even if it has some truth to it.

Here are a few common statements that most girls make (consciously or unconsciously) that give rise to conflict.

You are a momma's boy:

Even though most men are momma's boys, they hate to hear that especially from you! In some cases, the guy would have liked for some of your qualities that matches with his mom. So, you stating the obvious would be a disaster. Says Shweta Raghuram, a student, "I would hear him say I care the same way as his mom does. But the day I told him he was mom's pet, he hit the roof!" Every person is touchy about his/her mother and he's no exception. Hence, avoid bringing his mom into your conversation with him. It would be suicidal for the relationship if you do so.

Ugh! your friends:

No matter how much you love your guy, there are two things most girls can't stand about men — his love for sports and most importantly the boy gang he loves to hang around with. Irrespective of the fact that his friends are a decent bunch, you still hate to hear him say he enjoys drinking with them. But expressing your concern to him is a big 'no no'. "He would neither want you to point fingers at his friends, nor is he comfortable to let you praise them. It's a dicey situation," says, Sreevalli M. Dating or married, most guys hate to let go of their friends and shift their focus fully on you!

You are always like this:

Remember you fell in love with him for some of his qualities. It was not just looks that drew you to him. "True love is not about loving a perfect person, but learning to live with his imperfections." Remember this cheesy line? The next time you wanna crib about his attitude, reminding yourself of this will save you a lot of trouble. Says Harsha Sharma, a techie, "Would she like it if I said you will never change? Mutual respect helps keep the relationship in good shape."

We need to talk:

Oh no! Not again! This four-word statement is sure to make his temper soar! You realise that either of you saying 'Let's talk' means trouble in paradise! Men hate drama, so if you must talk, get candid and to the point! Says Arunima Chatterjee, "It helps to talk it out when your relationship hits a road block. However, using these words would only mean a threat. Instead, ask him to meet up for coffee and talk your heart out."

My Ex never did this:

No comparisons please! This is the most sensitive topic that's best avoided. He already hates the fact that you previously dated somebody. Now, bringing your Ex into your relationship would mean war! Comparing your guy with your ex will hurt his ego and you know how men are! They will never like it one bit! To save your relationship, let bygones be bygones. For any relationship to work, it's important to appreciate the person for what he is rather then pushing him to change which will ultimately boomerang on you. He might end up saying things like "Why don't you go back to him!" Hence, it's wise to weigh your words before speaking.

You are going bald:

With innumerable chemical-based products of reputed brands available in the market, you are spoilt for choice. Excessive trial and error methods result in disaster. With the kind of lifestyle, protecting your crowning glory has become quite a challenge. More so with men who tend to lose hair too soon and for whom the receding hairlines are very noticeable. That is definitely one of his major worries too. So this is the last thing you would want to tell him.

Gotcha! Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif spotted

Ranbir Kapoor with Katrina Kaif, in a still from Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, fifth film of his career, reports Hindustan times.

The cat’s out of the bag. Recent pictures of ‘good friends’ Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif hanging out on a secluded beach in Spain earlier this month, have put an ‘official’ stamp on the link-up rumours that the actor-couple has been denying.

The pictures have been published in this month’s edition of film glossy Stardust. In the snaps, Kat is seen in a red-white bikini, while Ranbir is by her side in a pair of beach shorts, sporting sunglasses.

“I think falling in love is beautiful. Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif never admitted in public that they are in love with each other. But Stardust and my team from USA were constantly on the run for exclusive images and information. When we got these images, we were sure that the couple is very much in love with each other,” says Ram Kamal Mukerjee, editor, Stardust.

Katrina and Ranbir were also spotted together at a coffee shop in Sri Lanka earlier this week. Ranbir is shooting for Anurag Kashyap’s Bombay Velvet in the country and Kat has joined him there, as the shooting of her next film, Bang Bang, has been rescheduled following her co-star Hrithik Roshan’s injury.

babRoyal baby's name 'George' scores low in baby-naming research

Scientifically speaking, Prince William and his wife Kate could have come up with a better name for their newborn, suggests a respected US psychologist who's studied how people react to different names.

"I definitely would not have selected the name George," said Albert Mehrabian of the University of California in Los Angeles (UCLA), the author of several books on names and other forms of "non-verbal communication."

Based on Mehrabian's research into how names influence the way people treat and think about others, George has a overall attractiveness percentile score of 36 -- compared, for instance, with James, which scores a perfect 100.

Broken down into categories, George did OK in terms of conveying an impression of being ethical and caring, but it was weaker in terms of projecting masculinity, success and fun.

Mehrabian, professor emeritus of psychology at UCLA, told AFP by email Wednesday he personally doesn't think George was a "stuffy" name, and he believed the British royal family had its own good reasons for going with it.

The child's great-great-grandfather was King George VI, who father was King George V.

"I only wish, for the little boy's sake, they could have picked a far more attractive name," he said.

In this Tuesday, July 23 file photo, Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge, carries her new born son, the Prince of Cambridge. (AP Photo)

"There are plenty of excellent names with fabulous connotations that would have been fitting nicely to a prince of the United Kingdom."

For generations George was a popular name in the United States, where George Washington is celebrated as "the father of our nation" for leading the War of Independence against Britain, then ruled by King George III.

Since the 1940s, however, George has slipped out of American favor, falling to 166th place on the US Social Security Administration's latest annual list of the most popular baby names. (The most popular names in 2012 were Jacob, Mason and Ethan for boys, and Sophia, Emma and Isabella for girls.)

Scholarly research notwithstanding, George was the most popular name of the day Wednesday among visitors to Nameberry.com.

"We actually love George and see it as a classic that's due for a comeback, and the royal baby should push it toward the top in a big way," said Pam Satran, a co-founder of the baby-naming website.

"George is actually back as a baby name in England, where it's in the top 100," she told AFP by email.

"But it has been slower to catch on in the United States, where it is more closely identified with the middle-aged George Bush than with the dashing George Clooney or a procession of King Georges." Photo and news by Hindustan Times

10 first-time experiences for newlyweds

Transition to married life is filled with many milestone "firsts," which strengthen the relationship with a spouse.

The Huffington Post has compiled a list of things that happen for the first time after a marriage:

The first ever fight between a couple is a lot more different and is a lot more charged, the Huffington Post reported.

Secondly, getting together with friends after the wedding is a little strange as some of them may feel that their married-by-30-clock is ticking, or become bitter that the newlyweds have "the perfect life."

Another first that a newlywed has is their first major purchase together.

The in-laws' problem is another first for the newlyweds as a husband is used to his family's flaws: He's learned how to tune out Mom's criticisms, Dad's elitisms, his sister's jealousy. And he just wants his wife to let their comments roll off their back too.

The first time a couple is asked when they are having a baby also makes the list.

It is also a must-do for many newlyweds to host a dinner party.

Another first is when a husband is approached by the first "flirty girl."

Then comes the part when the couple establish their first tradition together while honouring established rituals that were passed down from both of your families.

The married holiday together is one more first.

And lastly, the time you get scared of losing your loving spouse

Rang brings traditional Taant for fashion

TAANT is an indispensable part of the tradition and history of our country. Woven from fine cotton threads each piece of clothing made from taant tells the story of tireless hours put into weaving this fine art, reports daily star.

Regardless of its age of over two centuries, taant occupies a special place in every Bengali woman’s heart and most will be found to have worn at least one form of taant during their lifetimes.

For the last 19 years, Rang has been working with taant and has been consistently reinventing it through different contemporary designs and styles in order to keep up with the times while keeping tradition alive.

While every year Rang has a variety of taant saris in its collection this year Rang has introduced an exclusive taant sari collection for Eid. Given the weather in which Eid is going to be celebrated this year, taant saris would be an ideal choice to opt for while paying homage to tradition.

There are three design lines this year, namely Megumala, Pahari Cotton and Utshob and each of these features a number of saris with designs along similar themes. Pure cotton, half silk and Marseille cotton are mainly featured in the collection.

Motifs widely used in the clothing of tribal people of the country can be seen extensively in the designs, especially the temple motif; these are extremely time-consuming to make, and thus are very exclusive. Tribal designs and motifs have been used to bring a certain life and variety to the traditional material and to fuse two different traditions together.

Other than the saris with temple motifs, saris with ‘baluchini achaals’, full-body stripes and knee-length ‘paars’ can be seen in the collection.

The collection features 60 to 70 designs, which are ideal for casual events and Eid mornings as well, and comes at a range of Tk1,800 to Tk.6,000. As is understood from its name Rang is known for its use of bright and catchy colour in its outfits; keeping in mind the weather some soft shades have been used in the designs other than emphasising on red, black and white.

If you want a break from the heavy and conventional contemporary designs this Eid drop by at any of Rang’s outlets. Be sure to check their sister-concern, Shraddha this blessed Ramadan. Finding the right attire for the family can be an ordeal, especially for the elderly members as only a few boutiques and shopping houses showcase attires for the aged.

Keeping this niche market in mind, Rang opened Shraddha, a boutique offering exclusive designs for our beloved elders.

The colour scheme for the entire range varies from subtle shades of white and grey to vibrant yet subdued red-white, yellow, blue, violet, magenta, etc.

And there is more to Shraddha than attires for the seniors; their diverse line also showcases head caps (tupi), prayer mats (jaynamaj), prayer beads (tazbih), walking canes, shawls, dhoti, bed sheets, etc.|

Check out the showroom of Shraddha at Bangladesh-UAE Moitree Shopping Complex, 2nd floor, Kamal Ataturk Avenue, Banani. Call #982 0197

20 Things not to do to your hair

Dont's for your hair are as important as the do's. Whether you are a teenage girl or grandmother of three, there is no end to hair fall - right from the onset of your first menstrual cycle to the menopausal stage. Here's our list of 25 things you shouldn't be doing to your hair...

1. Do not use an anti dandruff shampoo on a regular basis, especially the over the counter ones as these can lead to hair damage.

2. Do not keep artificial colours in your hair all through the year, once it runs out let your hair be the colour it is, at least for a period of 2-3 months before you go for that streaking/global colouring treatment again.

3. Do not get multiple treatments like colouring and straightening at/around same time. Give your hair some rest.

4. Do not comb wet hair rigorously. Patience is the key for healthy tresses and also wet hair will shed more, so avoid combing them again and again.

5. Do not indulge in too many hair packs like vinegar and eggs, etc in one go. Overdoing hair packs can cause severe alterations in hair health.

6. Do not over-use hair styling gels. Stay away from chemical-heavy hair straightening gels and lotions that promise 'soft' hair with just one dab of ointment.

7. Avoid over-use of hair sunscreens, but conditioners can fulfill this task quite well.

8. Use a wide toothed comb if hair fall is present. Please do not use a combing brush or small comb. Also, avoid sharing your comb with others especially when you do not know their scalp coniditon.

9. If you have scalp psoriasis and also dandruff then do not oil your hair. As oil is like a meal for malasezia yeast that is the causative organism for dandruff.

10. Do not tie your tresses in a bun all the time, if you have long hair. This can lead to traction alopecia and lead to hairfall as well.

11. Do not use the same shampoo for months together. It's always a good idea to keep changing the brand.

12. Do not tumble dry hair as this is rough on hair follicles and causes root damage and hair loss.

13. Do not pick up hair serums without checking their ingredients with professionals first.

14. Do not go for a hair transplant at a very early age. However, if the balding is a lot and you feel the need for a transplant, then simply try a hair line restoration.

15. Do not tie wet hair as they are weak then, and the traction could lead to hair fall.

16. Don't let post pregnancy hair fall bother you, as this is normal and will subside as the weeks go by.

17. Do not use a home hair straightening iron more than twice a month.

18. Do not leave the head rollers on your hair over night or atleast not for more than 3-4 hours.

19. Do not go for head oil/powder massages if you are suffering from hair fall as this can lead to more root damage and hair fall. Also, most of the hair oils are only like an external conditioner and cannot get absorbed into the scalp.

20. Do not waste time on self medications if you suffer from hair fall or other scalp issues. Visit a dermatologist and remember it's normal to lose up to 100 hair follicles a day.

It can even be paired with a cute prom dress or a regular jeans and t-shirt for a casual day out.

7. Gradient and ombre nails: With this nail art trend, you can be as subtle or statement-making as you wish. The technique to master this gradual fade of colour from dark to light involves picking two to three shades in the same family and creating a luscious swirl effect that is as fun as it sounds. You can mix n’ match the colours to complement your outfit and this nail trend is great for a dinner date.

8. Caviar nails: Beaded nails are my favourite and this hot trend is making waves on runways as well. Don’t worry, this nail trend doesn’t involve fish eggs, but got its name because your nails look like you have little pieces of caviar on them. This one-of-a-kind nail art innovation brings avant-garde nail trends to your fingertips. Featuring pearlescent beads for a 3-D effect, caviar nails are cool and eye-catching, and can be paired with just about anything.

9. Polka dot nail art: With inspiration hailing from the flirty 1950’s polka-dot dresses, this nail art trend is making a statement on finger nails. Polka dots offer a fun contrast to plain coloured nails and are simple to create. Just pick a contrasting colour (white or black is a great option against most colours) and use a nail art pen or thin brush to create the dots. You have the liberty to pick your own colour combination.

10. Animal prints: While PETA might not be excited to hear this, but animal print really never goes out of style and this trend is very popular. Whether it’s leopard, zebra, giraffe, or a combination of all three, unleash your inner kitty cat in the form of sassy leopard spots and animal print nail art. Perfect to go with that LBD.

How to Get Rid of Oily Skin

Your skin is your main part of your body and it does a lot more than simply prevent you from falling out all over the place. Skin cells are frequently changing themselves, as a skin cell ages and moves toward the skin’s surface, the dying cell flattens out.

Many women nowadays experiences problems with oily skin and want to know how to get rid of oily skin naturally and fast. Oily skin becomes a very frustrating issue when it causes acne, blackheads, blemishes, zits, and other skin problems. To get rid of oily skin we have to minimize the amount of needless sebum (natural moisturizer) on our skin. Every night before you go to bed, wash your face using simple and highly effective technique: wash it with hot water, and then wash your face with cold water. Repeat it 5-7 times. It will boost blood circulation and clear pores deeply.

If a pimple comes on the day or two before an event, I would still recommend to going to see a board certified dermatologist. The pimple will go down in a day, so you can still inject it. Everything the same applies. You wouldn’t pick it, you wouldn’t pop it, and you should use a prescription if it’s available to you, if not use over the counter options. Don’t put anything on to dry it, it’s too much because it’s two days before the event and you’ll want to be able to cover the area with makeup. When you are covering it with makeup the day of the event, be sure to only use oil-free makeup.

If you struggle with blackheads, come see what they are, how they differ from white heads and what you can do to get rid of them

How to Make Fragrance Last (Without Overdoing It)

Ok, so you don't exactly need a master's degree to put on perfume. But there are a few tricks to help your scent last longer throughout the day without overdoing it. Kevin Verspoor, a perfumer for Drom Fragrances (the nearly 100-year old fragrance house that's created best-selling blends for companies such as Gucci), offers these tips to stay perfectly scented:

1. Know your points.

You've heard a zillion times that you should mist fragrance on your pulse points, but do you know what those are? They're the areas that have the most veins under the skin, which makes them the warmest spots on your body. And heat intensifies fragrance. Familiar spots such as your neck and wrists are great areas to mist, but to really make your scent last, try hitting these other pulse points too:

—the back of the legs, specifically behind your knees
—the area just above your hip bones
—nape of your neck
—cleavage
—small of your back
—insides of the elbows

2. Layer.

Those body wash and lotion versions of your favorite fragrance aren't just for decorating your bedside table. Using them before spritzing on your perfume will help your fragrance last longer and smell more flattering than squirting on endless mists from the bottle. And with that in mind...

3. Go easy.

You don't want to be a human air freshener, so don't continually re-spritz throughout the day. Doing so will not only choke those breathing the air around you, but you won't be able to tell how strong your fragrance is, because your nose adjusts to and neutralizes scent after several minutes (it's the same as when you sniff several fragrances in a row at the department store and suddenly they all smell alike). A good rule of nose: You should be able to smell the fragrance you have on in soft, occasional whiffs. If you can continuously smell it without taking a deep whiff, you overdid it.

Joseph Launches Inaugural Bag Collection

JOSEPH launched its inaugural bag collection this morning during breakfast at Selfridges, where it will be sold exclusively until June.

Designed in collaboration with accessories guru Katie Hillier, it comprises eight styles which combine Hillier's talent for versatility and technical know-how with Joseph's signature pared-back aesthetic - while Mongolian shearling straps and zebra and python panels all inject a fashion-forward verve.

"Our starting point was the play of contrasts that is inherent to the Joseph DNA: black and white; masculine with feminine; hard with soft; constructed with relaxed," Louise Trotter, the brand's creative director, told us. "With our clothes we try to reduce details to the minimum and our challenge was to try and recreate that with the bags. We removed classic stitching and worked on bonded techniques so that they could be as simple as possible."

"Hillier is a master of bags and we really used her expertise in building a bag that not only looks great, but will last."

Shop the collection now in store, or online at www.selfridges.com.

What a Nutritionist Eats... At a Cocktail Party

PRE-PARTY. "I always have an afternoon snack [150 to 175 calories] so I don't show up to a party hungry."

DIP STATION. "I skip the starches. Tortilla chips add up quickly. But I eat as much crudités as I'd like. If there isn't any, I find enough cherry tomato garnish to improvise a salad. I might also help myself to four pieces of shrimp, no sauce. I limit myself to 2 tablespoons total of hummus, salsa, or guacamole."

PASS-AROUNDS. "I never eat the puffs or flatbreads — they're usually 100 calories or more, a slippery slope. Instead, I allow myself two protein servings — four shrimp count as one. If the tuna tartar isn't smothered in mayo, I'll take one and throw out the crisp. Kebabs are also good."

Why you should try a hair spa this summer

Treatments using exotic oils and pastes can be a boon for thinning, heated tresses this time of the year

It's certainly hot and while you're watching your diet and eating right, also ensure you take care of your hair, which faces damage due to the heat. A hair spa can take care of that. Importantly, it seeks to normalise oil secretions due to sweating. Of course, one can go in for a hair spa for tired- out hair during any season, but with the hair losing its moisture and sheen during the summer, the treatment is especially a boon. Agrees beauty expert, Nisha Jhaveri. "Sun damage does have an adverse effect on the hair, leaving it dehydrated. But as people are constantly highlighting and streaking their hair, it makes the hair very brittle. So, I'd advise a hair spa at least once a week at any time," she says.

What is the treatment about?
If you're going in for a hair spa, the therapist would first take a look at what kind of hair you have, its quality, etc. You are then offered suitable remedies and packs. Some spas also have a protein treatment for hair. Says Jhaveri, "The idea is to rejuvenate and protect the hair. A serum is mixed with the conditioner onto the hair. I recommend using argan oil, which is very beneficial and can penetrate the hair shaft and restore moisture. After oiling and shampoo, a deep-conditioning mask or pack made with natural ingredients is applied to the hair and massaged well.

5 steps to a home hair spa
A hair spa is not just about pampering the hair with a massage. It also provides nutrients to the hair, with a variety of packs. The four essentials are: Oil massage, shampoo, mask and conditioner.

1. Massage your scalp: This is the first step to start a hair treatment at home. Warn some coconut oil or olive oil. Massage your head with this. This increases blood circulation and boosts hair growth.

2. Steam the hair: Dip a towel in warm water and squeeze the excess water out. Wrap the towel around the hair. This allows the oil to penetrate deep into the scalp. Do this for about 5-six minutes.

3. Wash your hair: Now, wash the hair with a mild shampoo. Use only cold water as hot water is harmful to the hair roots.

4. Apply conditioner: Post the shampooing, use a conditioner. You can also use the water of tea leaves to which a few drops of lime juice has been added. Or try a paste of grated beetroot to which hibiscus powder has been added. The hibiscus flower powder is a great base and is rich in iron and other vitamins. Rinse it off after half an hour with just warm water and no shampoo.

5. Lastly, a hair mask: The last step is crucial as it seals in the nourishment. Try making this mask at home. In a bowl, mix two eggs, honey and some coconut oil. You can add a ripe banana to this — banana is a softener. You can also use olive oil instead of coconut oil. Leave the mask on for 20 minutes, then rinse with a mild shampoo.

Try these hair masks
--------------------------
Avocado mask
Make a mix of 1 avocado, 1 egg and a little lemon juice. Apply this concoction to wet hair and leave on for 15 minutes. Rinse and wash.

Banana-almond mask
Mash up a banana and add a few drops of almond oil to this. Mix well and massage this on the hair. Allow it to remain for about 20 minutes, then rinse and wash hair. Gives softness to the hair.

Honey de-frizzing mask
Take half a cup of honey and yogurt. Add half a teaspoon of almond oil to it. Mix and add to the hair. Wash off.

Pumpkin booster
Blend a cup of cooked and diced pumpkin, half a tablespoon of coconut or almond oil, a teaspoon of yogurt and one teaspoon of honey. Apply on the hair and leave for 20 minutes. Rinse off. As pumpkin is a source of vitamin A and potassium, it calms the scalp and promotes hair growth.

6 Super ways to make sex breathtaking

Supermodel Heidi Klum, actress Eva Longoria, singer-actress Nicole Kidman and many others have gone on record saying that they like to bring out their kinky side in the bedroom.

Couples who have experienced their 'fetish' for such fantasies swear by its pleasure. Whether you want to be the wild cat and use the belt to control your partner or use sex toys to spunk up your game of love, kinky sex is a great way to add spice to your sex life. Klum had once said, "There's nothing wrong with using a nice garter belt." While she loves to rule, Longoria prefers to be submissive. She admits that she loves being tied up with silk scarves during lovemaking. She likes a man to take charge. Each one of us has a deep desire to be ruled or to rule. Kinky sex gives you the opportunity to turn those dreams into reality.

Tie me down
Imagine lying down on your bed waiting for your partner. Suddenly your hands are handcuffed and you get blindfolded. You have no idea what's happening when your partner whispers in your ear, 'Honey, submit yourself.' He caresses you and takes you on a journey where all your desires seem to be fulfilled. Imagine! You are bound to reach the ultimate point of satisfaction.

Role play
When you are bored with your routine sex life and love making becomes 'just another task, try making it fun (instead of faking that headache). Role-playing is a must-try for those who wish to fulfill their sexual fantasies. Think of some interesting scenarios and don some exciting costumes and let your imagination guide you. Dress up like a maid, or a teenager, or try more mature roles like MILF or a teacher seducing a student. Guys could enact the role of a cow boy, or a cabana boy.

Deliciously unexpected
Kinky sex is all about 'revealing' your wild side. If you are mild and sober in your real life, be the king of the fantasy world. Dominate the bedroom moves. Spank your partner or do smut talking - the shock your partner will get to see this side of you will get things in the right gear.

Sex toys
While many use them to satisfy themselves when their partner is away, you can try them when your partner is with you. The reason? Multiple orgasms. Dildos, vibrators, Wen ba balls are some toys you could try to kick-start a heated sexual frenzy.

Dance, baby, dance
A seductive dance is all it takes to woo your partner. Guys could try the American Pie dance (at your own risk) and girls could do the sexy pole dance. Play her favourite song in the background and do a close dance. Slowly touch her and feel her and you are all set for a hot and sexy night.

Spank her tight
Spank her, bite him, hit him, pull her hair, do what you like to make it a passionate sexual encounter.

These are just a few ways to make your sex life pleasurable. Bring out the sexy, naughty, bitchy you for a more fanatical sex.

9 things you should never tell your spouse

Long-time, happily married couples sometimes need to watch what they say and how they say it.

At the same time they also need to watch how they respond to what their significant other has to say.

Just because you're extremely comfortable with someone doesn't mean you never have to watch your mouth.

"Communication is tricky. We all hear words differently (and filtered through our experiences, which are certainly different from our partner's) and we all want to be communicated with in a style we understand," Life coach Jean Grossman said.

"I also believe that 'the tune makes the music.' If what we are saying is said in a kind or loving way it feels differently than when spoken in anger or retribution," she said.

So what are some things you should never say to your dearly beloved? After speaking with Grossman, as well as with some other relationship experts, Huff/Post50 came up with the following list of nine things to never say to your spouse.

1. "You always..." or "You never..."
Think about it. Neither of these is true. If you start a sentence with these words your mate is certain to shut down or start a fight. Stop for a minute and think about what you really mean to say -- and then say that instead.

2. "Don't you think so-and-so is attractive?"
Believe me, nothing good can ever come from a spouse giving you his or her opinion on this one. This will only fuel the flames of any argument that may be brewing.

3. "My ex-boyfriend/ex-husband/ex-girlfriend/ex-wife would never have done what you just did..." or "...would have done a better job than you..."
Talk about making a partner feel terrible in general, one should always shy away from comparisons.

4. "I'm just trying to hang in there until our last leaves for college..."
If you had to single out one phrase that leaves little room for reconciliation it would be this one. This statement is incredibly hurtful even if you recant what you said a few minutes later.

5. "I was on the fence about marrying you in the first place, and my worst fears were realized..."
If you're about to spit out a blanket statement like this, stop for a minute and think about what's behind your feelings. Talk openly about what's concerning you instead of lashing out.

6. "I guess our (academically or behaviorally challenged/drug- or alcohol-ensnared) kid got YOUR genes..."
You might as well say "I have no idea why I ever married you in the first place." Certainly playing the blame game will do nothing to help you realize and address what's legitimately behind your child's problems.

7. "You're just like your father or mother..."
Again, jump to what's really troubling you about your partner without belittling your partner's family in the process.

8. "You know it's always been your problem that..."
Who exactly wants to hear that from their partner? We all have a pretty good sense of ourselves at this point and having someone else point out a failing does nothing to engender a loving relationship.

9. "Surely you could tell I've been faking it all along..."
Just don't say this. Not ever. Even if it's true.

Singapore, a crafted haven

A Delhiite would easily feel at home in Singapore. Reason: People of different cultures and nationalities reside together in the city, just like in Delhi. And, like ours, Singapore, too, is a haven for foodies.

The Fullerton Bay Hotel conversation with a Singaporean, just talk about food. Well, that’s because a rich variety of cuisines such as Chinese, Malay, Indian, Peranakan and French, along with the local food, are served here. While there’s no end to the upmarket restaurants, its real heart lies in the hawker centres. Sample the Maxwell Food Court for Chinese fritters and Chendol (a traditional ice cream made of flavoured crushed ice topped with fruits and boiled sweet corn at times). For more local dishes, head to Lau Pa Sat, another hawker market-cum-food court. Try the Laksa (a soupy noodle dish) — one of the most popular dishes here. But if you are longing for the Indian flavour, go for the masala dosa at Shree Ganga here. Interestingly, Prata, their version of parantha is also a hot favourite here.

Shopping
After food, the second best thing to do here is to shop. To get a taste of local culture, visit Chinatown. From lucky charms, Singapore curios, cosmetics to bags and accessories, this market is a hit among shoppers. But if bulk shopping is on your mind, go to Little India. The Mustafa Centre here has perfumes, chocolates, cosmetics, bags, everything you can imagine... that too at discounted prices. For high street international fashion labels, Orchard Road is the place to be at, while Arab-style clothes, head to the Arab Street. Who knows you may end up buying a silk scarf for just 2 dollars here!

Adventure and fun
While in the city, do visit the Singapore Zoo. Have breakfast with orangutan Ah Meng and family, and say hello to the pandas. To get a closer view of the flora here, visit the Gardens by the Bay at Bay South, where there’s a Flower Dome, Cloud Forest, The Super Tree and the heritage gardens. Move to Sentosa, to experience the under water life at the S.E.A Aquarium. Or go for the bum boat ride on the Singapore river to know the history and get a close view of the tourist attractions.

Culture
Marking the end of the Chinese New Year is the Chingay Parade. Started in 1973 as as a neighbourhood parade highlighting only Chinese culture, it has evolved to be Asia’s grandest parade. Its theme this year was Fire in Snow, and the tableau from India saw participants dance to the tunes of the hit number, Choli ke Peechhe. The song Jai Ho was also performed at the event.
