Achkan in fashion

The achkan for men – a knee-length jacket – is a perfect example of taking your look to the next level. For a little more flair in design and cut, the angrakha style is a winner for this month.

Even something as simple as an open-waist coat can appropriately mix things up. It’s understandable for you to keep things lighter in the warm weather, so try anything that will get you through the day.

From extravagance to a subtle statement, trying out something new never hurt anyone. If anything, it results in more compliments being thrown your way.

A kurta may be a go-to item on a regular basis, but how many times does Eid come around every year? Make that extra effort, and invest in something carried in magnificent quality.

The items mentioned can be found in stores like Manyavar and Vasavi

Of Middle Aged Babes and Drooping Assets

Will somebody please tell me why a woman needs to wear a balcony on her bra? I know the bit about Romeo using the beauteous Juliet’s hair to clamber up her balcony, but to have a balcony on one’s bosom seems to me a bit weird, reports Times of India.

July and August season being sale season and that being the only time when I can buy anything in a mall without worrying myself into a nervous state, I happened to wander into a bra store the other day and was gob-smacked. There where balconette bras, demis, strapless, multi-ways, racer-backs and underwired in orange, yellow, candy-floss pink, midnight blue and black. And there were sheer lacy ones, and satin bras with itsy-bitsy undies to go with it that had cute little bows in the centre and - this knocked my pants off - a crotchless panty to complement a bra with holes where the nipples should have been covered!

And if Samuel Taylor Coleridge said:

Water, water, everywhere

And all the boards did shrink

Water, water everywhere

Nor any drop to drink, this is what came to the mind of your’s truly:

Bras, bras, bras everywhere

and not even one pathetic bra to wear….

Within five minutes of entering the shop and being given pitying once-overs by the lovelies who double up as store assistants - “how can you walk into our store with a 36++ requirement” - my spirits and my breasts drooped in disappointment. I did eye a certain racy number in a shade of red that would have driven a bull to desperation, but my assets warned me that wearing a feather on the breast might not be good either for my professional life nor my personal. The significant other in my life, I suspect, would spend the night sneezing from the allergy caused by the feather tickling him. And so, with my considerable assets feeling rather deprived and unadorned, I beat it from the store, feeling rather than hearing the sniggers from the bunnies, sorry… the lovelies. My assets are clearly non-performing assets (NPAs) given that they cannot be accommodated in a balcony, pushed up, pushed down, shown off, maximised or minimised.

My heart yearned for the good old cotton bra with its grand conical cup, that amma used to buy us sisters. “Iske size ka bodice dikhao”, she would say and the droopy-eyed store owner would look us squarely in the bosom and tell his assistant: “size 32 b lao”. Those were not bad bras, come on now - pop-queen Madonna became attained iconic status when she wore just them and a panty on stage and also made a million bucks from that one act!

How to become a middle-aged babe. I read a book by that name a few years ago and it was all about how forty-plus women need not throw in their hats but can actually transform themselves into these glamorous babes with smoky eyes, sexy clothes and come-hither painted nails. With that in mind, I moved to the next store, a happening Spanish brand that my 21-year-old frequents with collateral damage to my bank balance. She looks like a million bucks in the brand’s clothing though and so,  like a homing pigeon, I headed towards the store that had SALE emblazoned outside.

Whoever said the zero-sized model is passé should check out this store. I searched high and low, pulled out dozens of stuff lying in bargain boxes, looked under the table even where stuff seemed to have been discarded but there was nary a piece of clothing to hide my generous curves and the above-mentioned assets up-North. Not unless I wanted to outfit myself in prison-uniform striped PJs and over-sized shirt to go with it. And that would do nothing for the middle-aged babe that I wanted to be. Besides, I suspected this would drive the spouse out of the bedroom fearful of my PMS and I would not blame him – he has earlier witnessed grinding of teeth in irritation, hair coloured glorious burgundy and his white Italian linen shirt tossed into the washing machine with my purple dress.

Ever tried getting into one of those fashionably thin, dangerously-low pants that come in the cutest colours? I had to fairly tie myself in knots and consider lying on the trial room floor to wriggle myself into one recently, only to be sorely disappointed. Unless I wanted to wear them on my knee, I would have to abandon this fashion trend because the damn things hit a solid road block at the thighs.

I did try other things that are trending. Picked out tops with daring scooped back, but they displayed the ample tyres on my rear side, got into a kaftan dress but it made me resemble a whale in distress and eventually made it to the size XL corner of an Indian brand that makes clever dresses for real women like me. Ah, bliss!

And oh, did I tell you the near orgasmic pleasure of gorging on an almond muffin, a slice of heavenly banana loaf at the café on my way out of the mall? Never mind the middle-aged babe. I will make do with the middle-aged part. And that shiny glazed donut in that café...

Rang brings traditional Taant for fashion

TAANT is an indispensable part of the tradition and history of our country. Woven from fine cotton threads each piece of clothing made from taant tells the story of tireless hours put into weaving this fine art, reports daily star.

Regardless of its age of over two centuries, taant occupies a special place in every Bengali woman’s heart and most will be found to have worn at least one form of taant during their lifetimes.

For the last 19 years, Rang has been working with taant and has been consistently reinventing it through different contemporary designs and styles in order to keep up with the times while keeping tradition alive.

While every year Rang has a variety of taant saris in its collection this year Rang has introduced an exclusive taant sari collection for Eid. Given the weather in which Eid is going to be celebrated this year, taant saris would be an ideal choice to opt for while paying homage to tradition.

There are three design lines this year, namely Megumala, Pahari Cotton and Utshob and each of these features a number of saris with designs along similar themes. Pure cotton, half silk and Marseille cotton are mainly featured in the collection.

Motifs widely used in the clothing of tribal people of the country can be seen extensively in the designs, especially the temple motif; these are extremely time-consuming to make, and thus are very exclusive. Tribal designs and motifs have been used to bring a certain life and variety to the traditional material and to fuse two different traditions together.

Other than the saris with temple motifs, saris with ‘baluchini achaals’, full-body stripes and knee-length ‘paars’ can be seen in the collection.

The collection features 60 to 70 designs, which are ideal for casual events and Eid mornings as well, and comes at a range of Tk1,800 to Tk.6,000. As is understood from its name Rang is known for its use of bright and catchy colour in its outfits; keeping in mind the weather some soft shades have been used in the designs other than emphasising on red, black and white.

If you want a break from the heavy and conventional contemporary designs this Eid drop by at any of Rang’s outlets. Be sure to check their sister-concern, Shraddha this blessed Ramadan. Finding the right attire for the family can be an ordeal, especially for the elderly members as only a few boutiques and shopping houses showcase attires for the aged.

Keeping this niche market in mind, Rang opened Shraddha, a boutique offering exclusive designs for our beloved elders.

The colour scheme for the entire range varies from subtle shades of white and grey to vibrant yet subdued red-white, yellow, blue, violet, magenta, etc.

And there is more to Shraddha than attires for the seniors; their diverse line also showcases head caps (tupi), prayer mats (jaynamaj), prayer beads (tazbih), walking canes, shawls, dhoti, bed sheets, etc.|

Check out the showroom of Shraddha at Bangladesh-UAE Moitree Shopping Complex, 2nd floor, Kamal Ataturk Avenue, Banani. Call #982 0197

Joseph Launches Inaugural Bag Collection

JOSEPH launched its inaugural bag collection this morning during breakfast at Selfridges, where it will be sold exclusively until June.

Designed in collaboration with accessories guru Katie Hillier, it comprises eight styles which combine Hillier's talent for versatility and technical know-how with Joseph's signature pared-back aesthetic - while Mongolian shearling straps and zebra and python panels all inject a fashion-forward verve.

"Our starting point was the play of contrasts that is inherent to the Joseph DNA: black and white; masculine with feminine; hard with soft; constructed with relaxed," Louise Trotter, the brand's creative director, told us. "With our clothes we try to reduce details to the minimum and our challenge was to try and recreate that with the bags. We removed classic stitching and worked on bonded techniques so that they could be as simple as possible."

"Hillier is a master of bags and we really used her expertise in building a bag that not only looks great, but will last."

Shop the collection now in store, or online at www.selfridges.com.
