Perfume tips from the experts

DON'T store fragrances under hot lights in your bathroom as the temperature will alter the top notes, turning them sharper or sourer and sometimes musty. You should keep your fragrances cool by storing them in the fridge to prolong the scent.

DO use a variety of fragrances for different occasions and seasons. A collection of five to six different scents is recommended.

BEAUTY TIPS FROM AROUND THE WORLD

DON'T wear a sensuous fragrance on your wedding day. Instead, stick to jasmine or rose-based scents for a romantic but not overly sexy aroma.

DO wear a warm fragrance for a first date. Opt for a spicy scent like pepper to excite his senses.

DON'T wear an overpowering scent for a job interview. Stick to classic, unfussy smells.

DO spritz fragrance into your hair rather than all over your body. This will help the scent to last longer compared to quickly rubbing off your skin. It also means that when moving your head, there'll be a more natural waft of fragrance.

Jean-Claude Ellena, the perfumer for Hermes says:

“Smell is THE most important thing – let this guide you in choosing a fragrance, not whether it’s for a man or woman. The pleasure of the smell is key”.

WHAT'S COSMO'S BEAUTY BUY OF THE DAY?

Perfumer Serge Lutens says:

“Try a new fragrance on the skin. The skin is a conductor of our senses, it reacts, it anticipates – it can talk and shout!”

“Store your perfume correctly. Like a wine, if it’s kept in a bad condition, it will age badly and become sour”.

Camille Goutal, perfumer for Annick Goutal says:

“Perfume your hairbrush rather than your hair to prevent the alcohol from damaging it.”

“If you wear heady perfumes that last a long time – you can spray some on your coat and scarf the night before to avoid over-powering everyone when you arrive at work in the morning. You should always be careful not to put too much perfume on if it is quite strong. “

“For those who wear light perfumes that don’t last as long, it’s a good idea to use the body cream and shower gel that go with it, so the fragrance lasts much longer. You can also put perfume on pulse points, for example behind the knees, the ears or the wrists, on the neck or in the hollow of your arms. These places are extremely good vehicles for fragrance – a few drops are enough. Source-Cosmopolitan
